That was a time, when the Malayalam television industry saw the sprouting of mega serials, which usually crossed the limits beyond 100, 200 to 300 episodes. It was at that time a 40 episode limited serial ‘Avicharitham’, directed by K K Rajeev started its telecast. The tele-serial attracted a large set of audience and it even won the TV Critics award for best serial, screenplay and videography. The script writers of the serial were also got noticed. It was none other than Bobby and Sanjay, who have created a space for them in the Malayalam movie industry with their magical scriptwriting techniques.
Bobby and Sanjay are the sons of Actor Prem Prakash, the brother of Jose Prakash. A singer turned actor, Jose Prakash is famous for his anti-hero roles in various Malayalam films. His brother, Prem Prakash is a well-known actor and producer in the film and television industry. But Prem Prakashs’ sons, Sanjay and Bobby decided to tread through a different path of script writing. Apart from ‘Avicharitham’, they also scripted for ‘Avasthantharangal’, in which the lead role was enacted by their uncle, Jose Prakash.
Bobby and Sanjay started their film career with Sibi Malayil’s movie ‘Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum’. The movie which released in 2003 saw the excellent performance of Kalidasan, son of Jayaram in the role of Vasudev, for which he won the National and State award for the Best Child Artist in 2004. The movie was very well received by the movie lovers.
Their next project was in 2006 with Roshan Andrews in the movie ‘Notebook’. It was Roshan’s second movie after ‘Udhayananu Tharam’. After the great success of ‘Udhayananu Tharam’, the Malayalam movie industry was waiting for another hit from him. The movie ‘Notebook’ was beyond the expectations. The movie which revolved around the life of three teenage girls was critically well acclaimed and it also proved that how a well written script can change the whole treatment of a simple story which was already being told.
The real turning point in the career of Bobby and Sanjay was on the year 2011, with the release of Director Rajesh Pillai’s Traffic. It was one of the block busters of the year, which really set to the age of so called ‘new generation’ or experimental movies in the industry. The script of the movie was the highlight, which was well written and well placed. For that unique treatment, Bobby and Sanjay was honoured with Kerala State Award for Best Screenplay in 2011 along with Kerala Film Critics Award, Asianet Film award, Mathrubhumi Film award, Amritha and Reporter TV Film awards.
In the year 2012, Bobby-Sanjay again joined hands with Roshan Andrews for the movie ‘Casanova’. The film which released in January 2012 is said to have the highest ever first day collection record for any Malayalam movie. But, the reviews of the movie were not so impressive. Still, it was very well celebrated by the fans of great actor Mohanlal.
We must also thank Bobby and Sanjay for giving a break to Prithviraj with their movie ‘Ayalum Jnanum Thammil’ in the year 2012. The movie directed by Lal Jose and scripted by Bobby Sanjay was actually a come back for Prithvi, the youth icon of Malayalam movie industry. He won the Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his performance as Dr. Ravi Tharakan in this movie.
Prithvi was also casted in the next project of Sanjay and Bobby in the very next year itself. The movie ‘Mumbai Police’ again saw the combination of Roshan Andrews with Bobby and Sanjay. They again won the Kerala State Award for Best Screen Play with this movie. Now the ace script writers along with Director Roshan Andrews have bought the all time favourite actress of Malayalam movie industry, Manju Warrier to the limelight with their latest release ‘How Old Are You’. The movie is getting good response from the theatre.
There was a time, when we had talented script writers like Padmarajan, M T Vasudevan Nair, Lohidadas etc, who entertained as well as made us to think. Later we found the absence of such powerful scripts in our movies. But now we have hope as promising script writers like Bobby and Sanjay are here in our industry to give us the experience of wonderful scripting and a wonderful cinema...
