Jayasurya – An Actor of Substance

Watching the movie 'Apothecary' definitely we will think about the tremendous change actor 'Jayasurya' has bought in his acting. The kind of mature performance he presented in that movie was highly acclaimed by the critics. In his every minute movement, he was living like the character 'Subi Joseph'.

Jayasurya was born on August 1978 at Tripunithura, Ernakulam to Mani and Thankam. Slow and steady was his growth, which later made him the star of the Malayalam movie industry. His career started with the mini screen, anchoring a programme known as 'Jagathy Vs Jagathy'. Later he had cameo appearances in the movies like Dosth, Pathram and Aparanmar Nagarathil.

Jayasurya should be grateful to director Vinayan for opening him an entry into the industry, giving him the lead role in 'Oomapenninu Uriyadappaiyyan'. He didn't had a His performance as the deaf boy in the movie gave him a permanent place in the movie industry. Kavya Madhavan was his co-star in that movie, which got released in the year 2002.

In the same year, Jayasurya enacted in another movie directed by Vinayan. Though the movie 'Kaatuchembakam' was not a theatre hit, Malayalees saw the meeting of two versatile actors in the movie – Jayasurya and Anoop Menon, who later became the hit makers together. His another release in 2002 was 'Pranayamanithooval'. The movie saw Gopika, Vineeth Kumar etc on lead. Interestingly the movie was the debut movie of Gopika. .

While Jayasurya did many lead roles in his early career, he was not at all reluctant to do supporting roles too. In 2003, he did the lead role in 'Pulivaal Kalyanam' at the same time did supporting role in 'Swapnakoodu'. Both the movies did well in the box office. 'Swapnakoodu' was a youth movie, which saw Prithviraj, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya, Meera Jasmine and Bhavana on lead.

The year 2004 was quite a lucky year for Jayasurya. Jayasurya was able to mould the actor in him. The ever hit movie 'Chathikaatha Chanthu' got released in this year. It is a true fact that this was the movie, which made 'Jayasurya' the pet of Malayalam movie industry. His performance was highly commendable. That year he had releases such as Greetings, Vellinakshatram, Kerala House Udan Vilpannaykku etc.

Jayasurya's association with Prithviraj always made the movie lovers to rush into the theatres. Together they had created many hits like Swapnakoodu, Vellinakshatram, Classmates, Chocolate, Kangaroo, Lollypop, Robinhood, Mumbai Police etc. Classmates released in 2006 was one of the ever hit movies in the Malayalam movie industry. Jayasurya's role as Satheeshan Kanjikuzhi was very well noticed. He was able to portray the picture of a crooked politician on the screen. He also had a good on-screen chemistry with actress Roma in the movies like Chocolate, Lolly Pop, Minnaminnikoottam, Shakespeare MA Malayalam and Utharaswayamvaram.
After 2009, Jayasurya was able to work with many great directors including T V Chandran, Shyamaprasad, Roshan Andrews, Saji Surendran, V K Prakash etc. His childish character 'Vivek' in 'Ivar Vivahitharaayaal' was quite interesting. He appeared in around twenty characters in T V Chandran's movie 'Shankaranum Mohananum'. Though it was not a commercial success, Jayasurya was able to associate with a great director in this movie.

Malayalam movie industry always looks forward when Jayasurya and Anoop Menon appear together on screen. Though their first movie, 'Kaattuchembakam' didn't do well, their next movies like 'Cocktail', Beautiful', Trivandrum Lodge', 'David and Goliath', 'Hotel California' etc did magic in the theatres. It took long eight years after 'Kaattuchembakam', for Jayasurya and Anoop Menon to work together again in the movie 'Cocktail'. But more than 'Cocktail', people love to watch their movie 'Beautiful' directed by V K Prakash. 'Beautiful' was a trendsetter, which portrayed the best performance of Jayasurya ever.

Jayasurya was always best in serious characters as well as in soft roles. He always performed well in slightly villainous roles in the movies like Classmates, Arabikatha, Kangaroo, Lolly Pop, Vairam etc. He is also perfect in doing comedy roles, which he proved with the movie 'Punyalan Agarbhathis'. His role 'Joy Thakolkaran' with the Thrissur slang along with Aju made the audience burst into laughter.

Jayasurya is not only a good actor but also a good singer too. He had sung in the movies like 'Immini Nalloraal', 'Three Kings', 'Happy Journey' and 'Punyalan Agarbathis'. The song 'Ashichavan' in 'Punyalan Agarbathis' got placed in the hit list. He had also sung for an album 'Ormathalukal'.

Jayasurya is a person who keeps aside all his stardom and live like a normal man. He always love to get involved in social issues, considering himself to be a social being. This always makes him in a role model among the cine stars. Jayasurya is married to Saritha and they have a two children. Along with his wife he had started a boutique named 'Dejavu' in Panampally Nagar, Kochi, which is getting good response.
