It is not a very easy task for a mini-screen artist to enter the big-screen and to create his/her space in a big way. Most of them will show their face and then will get disappear. Usually they don't mark their presence on the silver screen. But the charming lady, Asha Sarath has a different story to tell. Though started her career as a television artist, Asha is now one of the most celebrated actresses of the Malayalam movie industry.
Born as the daughter of renowned classical dancer Kalamandalam Sumathy and V S Krishnankutty Nair, dance was a passion for Asha. Before entering into the cine world, Asha has already proved herself as a dancer under the training of her mother and uncle. At present, she is the director of 'Kairali Kalakendra', a Dubai based dance and entertainment organisation.
Before the release of 'Drishyam', the super hit movie of 2013, Asha was familiar as 'Jayathi' for the common. Yes, 'Jayanthi' has so much impact upon the audience. But the fact is that, Asha was there in the television industry , before 'Kumkumapoovu'. Her first serial was 'Jathakakathakal'. But it was the serial 'Nizhalum Nilavum Parayunnathu', which changed her destiny. Her performance as 'Anupama' in this serial made her win the Kerala State Television Award for Second Best Actress. 'Nizhalum Nilavum Parayunnathu' was telecasted in Amritha TV.
Asha's real break was her role as Professor Jayanthi in the serial, 'Kumkumapoovu'. The slight negative role was very well noticed and this very role was enough to prove her caliber in acting. It is none other than 'Jayathi', which had lead Asha into the big screen industry. Her other television serials were Indulekha, Alapanam, Kalathilakam, Michaelinte Santhathikal, Dream City, Ponnum Poovum etc. Most of them were telecasted on Doordarshan.
Asha had her entry into the big screen with the movie 'Friday' directed by Lijin Jose. The movie was released in the year 2012. She had a cameo role in this movie, as Parvathy, one among the childless couple. The movie was well received in the theatres and she too was noticed. It was the confidence upon her acting caliber, that made director Major Ravi to cast her opposite to Mohanlal in the movie 'Karmayodha'. Though the movie was not a blockbuster, Asha was very lucky to be part of a Mohanlal movie in the beginning of her career. Her another release in 2012 was 'Ardhanari'.
Unlike 2012, the year 2013, was one of the luckiest year for Asha. In 2013 she had three releases – Buddy, Zachariyayude Garbhinikal and Drishyam. Her role as 'Meenakshi' in 'Buddy', gave her a break from her typical saree and simple role, to a modern look. Her new look in jeans and tops were liked by the movie lovers. Bhoomika Chawla, Anoop Menon, Mithun Murali etc were her co-stars in 'Buddy'.
The two hits of 2013 – Drishyam and Zachariyayude Garbinikal – made Asha the most popular actress of Mollywood. 'Zachariyayude Garbinikal' was one of the emotional movie directed by Aneesh Anwar. Though there were many lead actresses like Sanusha, Geetha, Rima Kallingal etc in the movie, the character 'Susan' done by Asha stood unique. She enacted the wife's role of Dr Zachariya (Lal), the gynecologist.
No one other than Asha can give life to the arrogant I G of 'Drishyam' directed by Jeethu Joseph. The character 'Geetha Prabhakar' was a milestone in the acting career of Asha. It seems like she was not acting, but was living as 'Geetha'. Her performance in this movie lead her to portray the same role in the Drishyam remakes in Kannada and Tamil. Asha is very lucky to share screen with Kamal Haasan in the Tamil remake of 'Drishyam', named as 'Papanasham'. As per report, 'Papanasham' will hit the theatres in 2015.
The year 2014 also bought fame to the movie career of Asha Sarath. Her first release was Ranjith Shanker's 'Varsham'. She paired with Mammootty in this movie. 'Varsham' was also a break for Mammootty. He got back his image as a family man with this movie. Asha enacted as 'Nandini', the wife of the character done by Mammootty. Her another release of 2014 was 'Angels', which had mixed reviews.
Usually there is a talk that, marriage will make restrictions in woman's career, especially if she is an actress. But Asha's life completely disapproves this. Her career actually started after her marriage. As per Asha, her family is the one, which had supported her the most to bring up her career in both dance and acting. Asha is married to Sarath and they have two daughters – Uthara and Keerthana.
