Interview With Stars
Mukesh – The Full-fledged Actor

It was not an unexpected journey of Mukesh as an actor. As the son of renowned theatre artist O Madhavan and actress Vijayakumari, acting was nothing new to him. He grew up seeing dramas and later he started his acting career from the same dramas. He came to the movie industry, without giving many expectations to the viewers, but the movie lovers got much above than they expected from him.

Mukesh’s debut movie was ‘Balloon’, which got released in the year 1982. He is an actor, who was lucky enough to be part of so called new generation movies of 1980s. The movies like Ithu Njangalude Katha, Pinnilavu, Odaruthammava alariyaam, Akkare Ninnoru Maran etc still stays in the hit list of movie lovers. All these movies picturised the problems of youngsters, value of friendship, true love etc and were a good source of entertainment.

The movie which changed his whole career and gave him a hero image was ‘Mutharamkunnu P O’, directed by Sibi Malayil. He did the lead role as Dilip Kumar, a very innocent guy, who was forced to take up challenges to win his love. It was in the year 1985, the movie got released. The same year went crucial for Mukesh, as he started his association with Mohanlal in this year, with the movie ‘Boeing Boeing’. They later became hit makers together with the movies Ninnishtam Ennishtam, Adiverukal, Mazha Peyyunnu Madhalam Kottunnu, Kakkakuyil etc and still continue to be…

1980s is considered to be a good period for Mukesh. He was able to do several roles – comedy, emotional and also some character roles too. In Dheem Tharikida Thom, Mazha Peyyunnu Madhalam Kottunnu, Vandanam, Ram Ji Rao Speaking etc, Mukesh made us to burst into laughter. Especially, the debut movie of Siddique Lal, ‘Ram Ji Rao Speaking’ was one of the gems in Mukesh’s career. The roles of Mukesh in the movies Shyama, Thaniyavarthanam, Thalavattom etc proved that, he can do character and serious roles too.

Mukesh always did movies, which were multi-starred. His early career saw very few movies him as a hero. His associations with Mohanlal, Mammootty, Jayaram, Sreenivasan, Maniyanpillai Raju, Jagathy, Siddique, Sai Kumar worked well. Majority of his movies were super hits, making him one of the luckiest actors of his time.
The period 1990’s also saw Mukesh emerging as a star in the industry. Most of his lead roles happened during this period. It was in 1990, ‘In Harihar Nagar’ happened, which is still loved by the youngsters. Who can forget the cunning Mahadevan, the romantic Govindankutty, the funny Appukuttan, and the immature Thomaskutty.  Mahadevan was safe with Mukesh.  1990’s also saw the release of ‘Mannar Mathayi Speaking’, the sequel of ‘Ramji Rao Speaking’, God Father, Thooval Sparsham, Gajakesariyogam. Mukesh slowly began to have a change from his multi-starred roles to lead roles.

Mukesh was also able to work in all the sequels of Oru CBI Dairy Kurippu along with Mammooty. His character Chacko is always admired by the movie lovers. When he did lead roles in the movies, Kalyanapittennu, Kalyanakacheri, Oru Mutham Mani Mutham, Mannadiyar Penninu Chenkotta Chekkan etc, he was not reluctant towards the supporting roles in Akashaganga, Amma Ammayiyamma, Hitler etc. His unique way of handling comedy, especially his facial expressions, voice modulations etc were always liked by the audience.

From 2000 onwards, Mukesh began to get more character type roles. His roles in Chronic Bachelor, Vismayathumbathu, Udayananu Tharam etc were enough to prove his caliber. Though his roles still had a comic touch, it was strong enough to lead the whole movie.
As a producer, 2007 was a very lucky year for Mukesh and Sreenivasan too. It was then the well noticed movie, ‘Katha Parayumbol’ got released. The movie was well received in the theatres. The movie was jointly produced by Mukesh and Sreenivasan and for this venture Mukesh received Kerala State Award for best popular film producer in 2007.

This programme was even used in a movie called ‘One Man Show’ and Mukesh enacted as himself in this movie. He later anchored the programme ‘Deal or No Deal’ in Surya TV and now he is busy with anchoring the programme ‘Sell Me the Answer’ in Asianet.

Mukesh is an actor, who has conquered the movie industry with his unique performances. When we feel he is only fit for comedy and light roles, Mukesh will embarrass us with his character and serious roles. Mukesh started his career with drama and still maintains his relationship with it. Some of his popular theatre works are ‘Chayamukhi’ with Mohanlal and ‘Naga’ with his wife Methil Devika. Mukesh has even published a book Mukesh Kathakal – Jeevithathiley Nerum Narmavum. It deals with some incidents from his own life.
